The Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Maintenance Department (TNMVMD), Chennai has released an official notification inviting applications for Graduate Apprentices and Diploma (Technician) Apprentices for the academic year 2025-26. The recruitment is conducted under the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Act, 1973. This program offers fresh engineering and diploma holders from Tamil Nadu an excellent opportunity to undergo one-year practical training in automobile and mechanical engineering fields.

The apprenticeship training will not only help young graduates gain industry-level skills but also make them more employable in government and private organizations. All eligible candidates who passed their degree or diploma during 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025 can apply for these positions.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must carefully read the eligibility requirements before applying. Applications of those who do not meet the criteria will be rejected.

Educational Qualification

For Graduate Apprentices (Category I):

  • Must have completed a full-time degree in Engineering or Technology in the relevant discipline (Mechanical/Automobile).
  • The degree must be from:
    • A statutory university, or
    • An institution empowered by an Act of Parliament to grant such degree, or
    • Professional bodies recognized by the Central or State Government as equivalent.

For Diploma (Technician) Apprentices (Category II):

  • Must have completed a full-time diploma in Engineering or Technology in the relevant discipline (Mechanical/Automobile).
  • The diploma should be awarded by:
    • A State Council or Board of Technical Education, or
    • A recognized University, or
    • Any institution recognized by the Central or State Government as equivalent.

Age Limit

  • The age limit will be followed strictly as per the Apprenticeship Rules.
  • Minimum Age: 14 years.
  • Hazardous Industries: 18 years.

Previous Training / Work Experience

  • Candidates who have already undergone apprenticeship training under the Apprenticeship Act are not eligible.
  • Similarly, candidates with one year or more of work experience in the relevant field cannot apply.

Reservation of Vacancies

The reservation of seats will be provided as per the guidelines of the Apprenticeship Act.

  • SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates must upload valid certificates in the prescribed government format.
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates should provide the latest OBC(NCL) certificate, otherwise, they will be considered under the General category.
  • 4% of vacancies are reserved for candidates with disabilities.

Salary Scale (Stipend)

During the apprenticeship training, selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend:

  • Graduate Apprentices: ₹9,000/- per month
  • Diploma Apprentices: ₹8,000/- per month

This stipend is paid as per government apprenticeship guidelines. Candidates should note that this is a training opportunity and not permanent employment.

Duration of Training

  • The apprenticeship training will be conducted for a period of 1 year only.
  • On successful completion, candidates will receive a certificate of training, which will add great value to their professional profile.
  • However, completion of apprenticeship does not guarantee employment in TNMVMD.

Selection Procedure

The selection process is simple, transparent, and based purely on merit.

  1. Shortlisting of Candidates:
    • Shortlisting will be based on the percentage of marks obtained in the degree or diploma examination.
    • Higher marks will increase chances of selection.
  2. Intimation to Candidates:
    • Shortlisted candidates will be informed through their registered email ID.
  3. Certificate Verification:
    • Candidates must attend certificate verification at TNMVMD, Chennai, on the scheduled date.
    • Original certificates must be produced for verification.
  4. Final Selection:
    • After successful verification, the final list of selected apprentices will be published.

How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply online only through the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) portal.

Steps to Apply

  1. New Candidates (First-time Enrollment):
    • Visit the NATS portal.
    • Register as a student by filling in personal, educational, and contact details.
    • Upload certificates and complete the enrollment process to receive a 12-digit enrollment number.
  2. Already Enrolled Candidates:
    • Login using email ID and password.
    • Search for “Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Maintenance Department” under advertised vacancies.
    • Click “Apply” and ensure the status shows as Applied.
  3. Important Note:
    • Candidates must upload degree/diploma provisional certificate or consolidated mark sheet.
    • Enter the correct percentage of marks in the NATS portal. Applications without marks will be rejected.

Physical Standards

  • Candidates must meet the minimum physical standards prescribed in Clause 4 of the Apprenticeship Rule 1992.
  • Certificates related to medical fitness may be required during verification.

Travel and Accommodation

  • No TA/DA (Travel Allowance / Dearness Allowance) will be provided for attending certificate verification.
  • Candidates must arrange their own boarding and lodging during training.
