1. Educational Qualifications
Additional Chief Fire Officer
- A Bachelor’s degree from any recognized Indian university or institution recognized under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
- Completion of the Divisional Officer’s Course or Fire Prevention Course from the National Fire Service College, Nagpur.
- Alternatively, a degree in Fire Engineering/Fire Technology/Fire and Safety/Science (Fire) from a recognized university.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer
- A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent qualification as described for the Chief Fire Officer.
- Completion of Divisional Officer’s Course or Fire Prevention Course from a recognized institute.
Fire Officer
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Engineering, Fire Technology, Fire and Safety, or Science (Fire) from a recognized university.
- Alternatively, graduates of any discipline who have successfully completed the Sub Officer Fire Course from National Fire Service College, Nagpur, or equivalent recognized institutions.
Sub Officer (Fire)
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Engineering, Fire Technology, Fire and Safety, or Science (Fire) from a recognized university.
- Alternatively, graduates of any discipline with successful completion of the Sub Officer Fire Course from recognized institutions.
Note: Candidates who have completed training or courses approved by Surat Municipal Corporation are also eligible. Science graduates may be given preference for certain posts.
2. Age Limit
- Maximum Age for All Posts: 45 years (as on 9th October 2025)
- Age relaxation is applicable as per government rules for candidates belonging to reserved categories, including SC, ST, SEBC, EWS, and disabled candidates.
- Candidates currently employed in SMC as regular employees may have different age norms applicable.
3. Experience Requirements
- Additional Chief Fire Officer: Minimum 7 years of service experience in Fire Brigade operations, including at least 3 years in a post equivalent to Station Officer or Assistant Divisional Officer in government/local bodies or recognized undertakings.
- Deputy Chief Fire Officer: Minimum 7 years of experience in Fire Brigade operations with 3 years in a post equivalent to Station Officer or Assistant Divisional Officer.
- Fire Officer: Minimum 3–5 years of post-qualification experience in Fire Brigade operations.
- Sub Officer (Fire): Minimum 1–3 years of experience after obtaining the required qualification.
Note: Experience should be post-qualification, and only experience certified by the competent authority will be considered valid. Self-declaration or unverified experience will not be accepted.

Disqualifying Physical Defects: Knock Knee, Pigeon Chest, Squint Eyes, Flat Feet, Varicose Veins, Hammer Toes, Fractured Limb, Decayed Teeth, Skin Disease, and other communicable diseases.
Medical Examination: Candidates will undergo a medical fitness test based on SHAPEI criteria – Psychological (S), Hearing (H), Appendages (A), Physical capacity (P), Eye-sight (E), and general fitness (I).
5. Knowledge & Skills
- Basic knowledge of computer applications as prescribed in Gujarat Civil Services Classification and Recruitment Rules.
- Adequate proficiency in Gujarati, Hindi, or both languages.
6. Reservation & Special Provisions
- Reservations are applicable for SC, ST, SEBC, EWS, and disabled candidates in accordance with Gujarat government rules.

8. Selection Procedure
The recruitment process consists of multiple stages:
- Written Examination – Knowledge of fire services, general awareness, and technical subjects relevant to the post.
- Practical Test – Assessment of firefighting skills, rescue operations, and physical fitness.
- Interview/Oral Test – Evaluation of candidate’s aptitude, communication, leadership qualities, and knowledge of fire safety protocols.
- Document Verification – Verification of educational certificates, experience, age proof, caste certificates, non-creamy layer certificates (if applicable), and medical fitness certificate.
Candidates must appear for document verification, written tests, practical tests, and interviews at their own expense. No travel or other allowances will be provided by SMC.
9. Required Documents

- Proof of age (birth certificate, school leaving certificate, or mark sheet).

10. Training and Probation
- Candidates appointed as Additional Chief Fire Officer or Deputy Chief Fire Officer must complete the Divisional Officer’s Course within the probation period (or extended period of one year in case of delays due to administrative reasons).
- Candidates already holding a valid Divisional Officer’s Course certificate will be exempt from repeating the course.
- Sub Officers and Fire Officers will undergo respective fire safety and operations training as per SMC norms.
