For decades, millions of Indian households, particularly in rural areas, depended on traditional cooking fuels like firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes. While these fuels were easily available, they had severe consequences—indoor air pollution, harmful smoke-related diseases among women and children, and environmental degradation. To address this issue and promote clean cooking energy, the Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
The scheme was introduced by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) on 1st May 2016 at Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. It aimed to empower women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households by providing them with LPG connections at no upfront cost. This initiative has transformed millions of lives, reducing health risks and ensuring that women do not have to spend long hours collecting firewood or inhaling smoke-filled kitchens.
The Ujjwala scheme has become a cornerstone of India’s energy and welfare policies, symbolizing the government’s commitment to inclusive development and environmental sustainability.
